Telling a story through video

We all tell stories, without even thinking about it. Just talking to another human about an experience we have had is storytelling, and the enthusiasm we portray, and the details we focus on is what makes our story engaging for the other person. Think of your video content the same way, only one person is watching, and your ability to keep them interested by your enthusiasm and attention to detail is the same is as if they were right in front of you. And I don’t expect you to go out and crush it on your first try, this is a learning curve for you, just like it was for me.

Storytelling through video needs to have a purpose. WHY would the viewer watch your video/ What is in it for them? Remember it’s not about you, it’s about them. So when you are putting your video together, whether you are writing a script or making a storyboard, you need to ensure you are providing value for your client, through an interesting an engaging video, Your video needs to have a beginning, a middle and an end. So simply, that could mean an introduction as simple as “hi team, today we are looking at… or “hi guys, did you know that…” then move to the middle section which gives more detail and more value for the client, solving more problems, such as “this product or service is going to make your lives so much easier by…, and then wrap up at the end with a conclusion and call to action such as “so there you go, come and get some at…”

Some great video ideas include following tik tok trends, even if you cant do them it’s sometimes just as funny and engaging watching people or businesses make fun of themselves and fail in the process. Video testimonials – if you have super loyal customers record their testimonials! Ask them, they can only say no! Behind the scenes videos – if you are a bakery or restaurant, film stuff being made, film the head Chef putting the finishing touches on their signature dish. You’re a car yard? Take videos of a car that is up for sale, explaining features and benefits. Check out Doug Dumuro on Youtube for his car reviews and then use that as inspiration. Oh you’re a fitness company? Easy, what workouts can be done in 5 minutes that you can record and give away for free? You’re a chiro, or osteo, or physio, or rehab? Check out bob and brad, super low tech but great content.

Watch youtube videos that are in a similar field – what are they doing that you could use as inspiration? What value to you find, and would it be of value to your clients? Write all of these down – this forms the basis of your content plan.
